Summary

In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate。 She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed。 Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change。

Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases。 Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold。 But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades。 Along the way, she has discovered other victims。

Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible。 The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement。 He is the most cunning of all serial killers。 He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law。

He is a judge, in Florida—under Lacy’s jurisdiction。

He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way。 How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?

I thoroughly enjoyed this Lacy Stoltz investigation as a stand-alone, so it isn't imperative that you read The Whistler first。This novel has a twisty plot, cleverly executed by a master storyteller, you just can't go wrong with Grisham! This is not some average law drama。 In fact, the story gets you out of the confines of a courtroom and keeps you on the run。I also enjoyed the intimacy created around each character, the scene flow, and the changes of POV 。 。 。 this will make a great screen adapt I thoroughly enjoyed this Lacy Stoltz investigation as a stand-alone, so it isn't imperative that you read The Whistler first。This novel has a twisty plot, cleverly executed by a master storyteller, you just can't go wrong with Grisham! There was a day when I waited eagerly for any Grisham novel and now I've realized it's been ten years since I've read one。 Lacy Stoltz is a lawyer who works as an investigator for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct。 She is approached by a woman who claims a sitting judge murdered her father and several others over the last twenty years。 The clues are only circumstantial but the method is unique。 As Lacy delves in to start her own investigation the Judge becomes aware and is watching。 This is There was a day when I waited eagerly for any Grisham novel and now I've realized it's been ten years since I've read one。 Lacy Stoltz is a lawyer who works as an investigator for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct。 She is approached by a woman who claims a sitting judge murdered her father and several others over the last twenty years。 The clues are only circumstantial but the method is unique。 As Lacy delves in to start her own investigation the Judge becomes aware and is watching。 This is a suspenseful and fast paced read。 The judge is careful and methodical but anyone can make a mistake。 With any Grisham novel I'm know I'm going to learn aspects of the law。 I appreciate that Grisham ties up a lot of little loose ends very neatly although maybe not in a legally satisfying way。 Lacy was the investigator in a previous book from 2016 called The Whistler, but I read this easily as a stand alone。 This is for any Grisham fan and those who enjoy legal thrillers。 Thank you to NetGalley and Doubleday Books for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

More Lacy Stoltz。 More Lacy Stoltz。 More Lacy Stoltz。 This second book in the Whistler series gives Lacy a tricky dilemma to untangle。 A woman wants to remain anonymous while reporting a sitting judge guilty of multiple murders。 A serial killer is on the loose and this sociopath has on-line skills that keep him ahead of law enforcement while highly capable of tracking down his victims。 Who will be next? Jeri Crosby, the woman who has been tracking him since her father's death twenty years ago? Jeri Crosby, the woman who has been tracking him since her father's death twenty years ago? Lacy Stoltz, the interim director for the Board on Judicial Conduct? This rises to the top of the pack for me in the field of Grisham's novels。 I enjoy a woman protagonist and in this one we get two。 There is plenty of cloak and dagger as well as a thrilling game of cat and mouse in multiple contexts。 Finally, this is a legal thriller without any political strings attached。 It is just downright entertaining。 Mr。 Grisham, please give us another Lacy Stoltz book soon。 With the future she has planned, there would be many ways for her to stumble upon another legal dilemma to untangle。A big thank you to Doubleday and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 I haven't read a John Grisham novel in a long time, but the description of this one intrigued me。 It was a different take on a legal thriller - Lacey Stoltz works for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct。 A woman who wishes to remain anonymous comes forward with a complaint against a sitting judge: that he's a serial killer。 Lacey and her team, by law, have to investigate the complaint。 Apparently it's the second Lacey Stoltz book, but it work I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 I haven't read a John Grisham novel in a long time, but the description of this one intrigued me。 It was a different take on a legal thriller - Lacey Stoltz works for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct。 A woman who wishes to remain anonymous comes forward with a complaint against a sitting judge: that he's a serial killer。 Lacey and her team, by law, have to investigate the complaint。 Apparently it's the second Lacey Stoltz book, but it works well as a standalone。 I wouldn't say this novel was particularly fast-paced。 It got bogged down with what seemed like tangent descriptions: Lacey and her boyfriend, Lacey and her brother, Jeri and her daughter, etc。 Some reviewers have said the ending was predictable, but I honestly thought it was going to go a different way。 Overall, a solid legal thriller。 。。。more

”When you murder someone you make ten mistakes。 If you can think of seven of them you’re a genius。”Grisham takes us on another ride through the legal community, this time accompanied by a very invested arm-chair detective and a lawyer who investigates misconduct involving judges。 Lacy’s job usually involves investigating judges that are accused of fraud, drinking on the job or taking bribes。 She’s bored with her day-to-day grind and her 3 year relationship with an FBI agent is at a standstill。 U ”When you murder someone you make ten mistakes。 If you can think of seven of them you’re a genius。”Grisham takes us on another ride through the legal community, this time accompanied by a very invested arm-chair detective and a lawyer who investigates misconduct involving judges。 Lacy’s job usually involves investigating judges that are accused of fraud, drinking on the job or taking bribes。 She’s bored with her day-to-day grind and her 3 year relationship with an FBI agent is at a standstill。 Until one day, Betty Roe, shows up with a cloak and dagger accusation regarding murder and a sitting judge with a spotless record。 And it’s Lacy’s job to investigate。 This novel, as most of Grisham’s, was well thought-out, fast-paced (though it did have a few slow moments), and in the end, deeply satisfying。 。。。more

The Judge's List is an interesting novel。 It is about a judge that is a serial killer and the woman that has uncovered his secret。 She is frightened for her life but won't tell the authorities what she knows。 She informs the judicial conduct board and they start an investigation。This novel was considerably different from the previous novels that John Grisham has written and I had to keep reminding myself of that fact。 I did get annoyed with the Jeri character as she was so secretive about where The Judge's List is an interesting novel。 It is about a judge that is a serial killer and the woman that has uncovered his secret。 She is frightened for her life but won't tell the authorities what she knows。 She informs the judicial conduct board and they start an investigation。This novel was considerably different from the previous novels that John Grisham has written and I had to keep reminding myself of that fact。 I did get annoyed with the Jeri character as she was so secretive about where she obtained her information。 That was my only complaint about this title。 。。。more

Grisham is back in his sweet spot with The Judge’s List, this novel is a cat and mouse game as the judicial commission tries to investigate a judge who may be a serial killer。 We’ve met Lacy before in The Whistler and she’s now been dragged into another criminal case。 She is contacted by a woman whose father was murdered decades ago and she is convinced the killer is a former student of his with a grudge。 In fact, she thinks he's acted on lots of grudges and left several bodies in his wake。Grish Grisham is back in his sweet spot with The Judge’s List, this novel is a cat and mouse game as the judicial commission tries to investigate a judge who may be a serial killer。 We’ve met Lacy before in The Whistler and she’s now been dragged into another criminal case。 She is contacted by a woman whose father was murdered decades ago and she is convinced the killer is a former student of his with a grudge。 In fact, she thinks he's acted on lots of grudges and left several bodies in his wake。Grisham departs slightly from a legal procedural but provides us with a detailed mystery that has several twists and turns。 The path the accuser has taken to unravel the judge's complex criminal history is so impressive even the FBI is wow-ed in this one。 You'll be intrigued by the extent the judge takes to cover his tracks, shocked by the shallow grudges and certainly surprised by the ending。Thanks to Doubleday for a copy of this novel。 All opinions above are my own。 。。。more

Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of The Judge's List by John Grisham。As a fan of John Grisham, I was excited to preview his newest novel。 The Judge's List is book two with Lacy Stoltz as the main character and can easily stand alone。 A corrupt judge being investigated for murder is an excellent premise for a suspenseful mystery, a patient antagonist who knows the law。 However, without any plot twists, the book falls flat。 I had trouble liking Jeri, the woman who brings forth the information on Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of The Judge's List by John Grisham。As a fan of John Grisham, I was excited to preview his newest novel。 The Judge's List is book two with Lacy Stoltz as the main character and can easily stand alone。 A corrupt judge being investigated for murder is an excellent premise for a suspenseful mystery, a patient antagonist who knows the law。 However, without any plot twists, the book falls flat。 I had trouble liking Jeri, the woman who brings forth the information on the murders。 The book was too predictable, and the ending too nicely wrapped up。 。。。more

If asked whether I was a fan of John Grisham, my best answer would be “sometimes。” I have loved some of his stuff (esp earlier books), but some have been “meh。” Last year’s A Time for Mercy, #3 in the Jake Brigance series, was a big disappointment for me (three stars — I’m an easy grader, what can I say?) Although I had not read The Whistler, featuring Lacy Stolz, I was happy to receive a copy of The Judge’s List (second in what looks like a series featuring Lacy) from Doubleday Books and NetGal If asked whether I was a fan of John Grisham, my best answer would be “sometimes。” I have loved some of his stuff (esp earlier books), but some have been “meh。” Last year’s A Time for Mercy, #3 in the Jake Brigance series, was a big disappointment for me (three stars — I’m an easy grader, what can I say?) Although I had not read The Whistler, featuring Lacy Stolz, I was happy to receive a copy of The Judge’s List (second in what looks like a series featuring Lacy) from Doubleday Books and NetGalley in exchange for this honest review。 There are references throughout this second book to book #1, but this one stands alone just fine。 Three years after the events in the first book, in which Lacy was nearly killed as she worked to investigate a corrupt judge in her role as an investigator for Florida’s Board on Judicial Conduct, Lacy is nearing forty, still single and getting bored with her job。 A mysterious woman brings her information about a judge who just might be a serial killer。 The woman has investigated/stalked him for twenty years, and has a ton of information that she hopes will convince Lacy that the BJC should open a murder investigation。The judge is brilliant, extremely patient, and well aware of the law。 Although it seems any of the murders will be impossible to prove, Lacy begins a very creepy adventure looking into the potential case。 This one was way better than “meh,” and avoided the resolution letdown of A Time for Mercy。 TBH, this one creeped me out, and I was actually eager to finish it so I could relax…four stars。 。。。more

What can I say about John Grisham that hasn't already been said a hundred times over。 He really is the master of the legal thriller and The Judge's List is just more evidence of that。 His books always draw me in from the first few pages and leave me needing to read more。 I binged this book in one lazy Saturday at home during lockdown and I am not sorry about it。 I will read anything this man writes and have been doing so for many many years now。The Judge's List sees us reunited with Lacey Stolz What can I say about John Grisham that hasn't already been said a hundred times over。 He really is the master of the legal thriller and The Judge's List is just more evidence of that。 His books always draw me in from the first few pages and leave me needing to read more。 I binged this book in one lazy Saturday at home during lockdown and I am not sorry about it。 I will read anything this man writes and have been doing so for many many years now。The Judge's List sees us reunited with Lacey Stolz from The Whistler。 It is 3 years later and she is almost 40 and trying to work out what she wants from life。 Her job at the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct is not exciting her anymore and she is contemplating a change。 That is until a mysterious phone call leads to case like no other she has ever worked on。 The FBJC does not do murder cases, but there has never been an allegation that a sitting judge was a serial killer before。 We know from early on who the killer is, a very clever and cunning judge who has a list of people who have wronged him in his life。 He is patient and doesn't leave any evidence behind。 But somebody has figured him out now。It is a page turner, and you will not see the ending coming。 I certainly didn't。 It was a WHAT moment at midnight that made me applaud the brain of John Grisham。 Never a dull moment as we watch Lacey and her team try to get the evidence to take the judge down。Thank you to Hachette Australia for sending me an advanced copy of this book to read。 Out on October 19th。 。。。more

How will they stay off the judge’s list as they close in on him?John Grisham first blew readers away with A Time to Kill, which began the path that would make him king of the modern legal thriller。 He knows of what he writes having worked 60–70-hour weeks in a Mississippi law practice。 The Judge’s List is Grisham at his finest。My review will be posted on Goodreads starting September 29, 2021。 I would like to thank Doubleday Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review。 。。。more
